I’m excited to share that I was recently featured in a Channel 9 article, where I joined a panel of experts to recommend the best shoes for plantar fasciitis—a common yet painful condition that affects many Australians.

As the Principal Physiotherapist at Get Better Physiotherapy, I’ve treated countless patients with plantar fasciitis. One of the most important steps to recovery? Wearing the right shoes.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is an irritation and inflammation of the plantar fascia — the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel to your toes. Its role is to support the arch of your foot and absorb shock during movement.

If you’ve ever felt a sharp, stabbing pain in your heel first thing in the morning, you’re not alone. That’s a classic sign of plantar fasciitis — often described as “walking on broken glass.”

Why Footwear Matters

Supportive footwear is crucial. The wrong shoes can worsen your symptoms or prolong your recovery. As I mentioned in the article:

“Shoes that have arch support for sure. Some people may require more or less arch support depending upon how flat their arches are, and shoes with a slightly higher heel will help to reduce the pressure on the heel.”

Walking barefoot — especially on hard surfaces — is a big no-no. Instead, choose footwear with:

  • Built-in arch support
  • Cushioned insoles
  • A slightly raised heel
  • A firm but flexible sole
