What are the symptoms of plantar fasciitis?

The major complaint of those with plantar fasciitis is foot pain or sore heel. This tends to develop gradually over time. It usually affects just one foot, but can affect both feet. The pain is usually worse in the mornings or after prolonged activity.

What causes it?

  • Overuse
Spending excessive time on your feet, particularly a sudden increase in the amount of exercise (e.g. walking)

  • Ankle stiffness
If you have tight calf muscles or a stiff ankle, this can increase the stress placed on the plantar fascia.
  • Age
This condition is more prevalent in middle aged and older people.
  • Weight
Overweight individuals are more likely to have plantar fasciitis
  • Shoes
Wearing shoes with poor support can contribute to this injury.
  • Flat feet can also put a lot of strain on the plantar fascia causing inflammation over a period of time.

  • Heel spurs can be formed due to arthritis and prolonged standing . This in turn causes swelling of the plantar fascia.
