Have you done neck stretches lately? Well, I think I know what the answer is going to be. In that case, I have a few questions to as you! Does your neck feel stiff after prolonged sitting at work? Or is it on getting out of bed in the mornings? Or perhaps it is after you have gone for a long drive? As they say, prevention is better than cure. I am sure you have heard this before but stretches are very important to maintain flexibility in the muscles of the neck. Especially so if the neck has to be in one position for a long time like sitting or withstanding high pressure like doing a high intensity exercise. Repetitive activities like lifting or sustained activities like a long drive can strain the muscles around the neck. Stretching these muscles regularly will ensure that tension does not build up in these muscles.
These simple but effective neck stretches can be done while you are sitting at work or waiting for the bus or even as a cool down after your work out! However, it is important to do these stretches at least 3 to 4 times a day. This helps in keeping the neck joints and muscles mobile. Also, it is important to hold each stretch for 5-10 seconds to ensure an effective stretch. However, if the neck stiffness or soreness is still not relieved or you are getting serious symptoms like headaches, it is very important to get assessed by a Physio. If not, the symptoms can get aggravated and become chronic. It is always harder to treat chronic pain. So don’t let your neck stiffness or soreness progress to neck pain! Here is a quick snapshot of what stretches you can do to improve flexibility in your neck
